# Employment periods

An employment record is a series of **periods**. Each period holds one set of terms: role, place,
and pay. When terms change, you start a new period instead of overwriting the old one. Letters are
drafted from **confirmed** periods only.

Periods live on the **Employment** tab of [a worker's page](/workforce/people/worker-page/).

## Period states

| State | Meaning |
|---|---|
| **Draft** | Being filled in. A thin bar shows how complete it is. It cannot be used for a letter |
| **Current** | Confirmed and in force today |
| **Upcoming** | Confirmed, starting on a future date. Today's job stays current until then |
| **Closed** | Ended, or replaced by a newer period |
| **Locked** | A letter or report used these facts. Corrections require an amendment |

## Record the first period

1. On the worker's **Employment** tab, select **Add employment period** (or **Start new terms** in
the header). Lexpoint starts a draft and opens **Employment facts**.
2. Work through the three sections. Changes save automatically — a **Saving** / **Saved** chip shows
   the state.
3. When every section is complete, select **Confirm terms**, check the summary under
*Confirm these terms?*, and select **Confirm terms** again.

### Role

| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| **NOC** | Required. Search and choose the occupation code. The information button opens the NOC details |
| **Occupation inside this NOC** | Appears only when the NOC splits into more than one occupation. Optional |
| **Job title** | Required. Defaults to the NOC title. Change it to the title you use on offers and letters |
| **Duties** | At least one, up to 10, each up to 280 characters. **Suggest duties** proposes lines from the NOC for you to review and add |

### Place

| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| **Worksite / report-to** | Required. Your worksites from Program readiness |
| **Supervisor** | Optional |
| **Start date** | Required |
| **Permanent role** | On by default. Turn it off to set a required **Fixed end date** after the start date |

### Pay

| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| **Full-time schedule** | On for full-time, off for part-time. Full-time needs 30 or more hours per week |
| **Hours per week** | Required, between 0.5 and 168 |
| **Wage** and **Wage unit** | Required. **Hourly** or **Annual**. The amount is stored as an hourly wage in CAD; an annual salary is converted using the weekly hours |

Under the wage, a **Job Bank** band compares the hourly amount with the published low, median, and
high wages for the NOC in the worksite's area, and with the **Provincial floor**, each marked
**Met** or **Below**. It is a reference, not a decision.

If the person's own work history lists a job at an employer whose name matches yours, its title
appears under **Profile job match**. **Use this job →** links it to this record.

**Preview** shows the latest saved terms at any point.

After you confirm, the person sees the confirmed terms in their own account — see
[Your employment record](/individuals/employment/employment-record/).

## Correct a confirmed period

Open the period from the Employment tab and select **Edit this period**. Use it for mistakes or
missing details in the same period; it does not create a new one. Select **Save correction** when
done.

**Edit this period** is not offered once the period is **Locked**, and older periods that a newer
one has replaced are read-only.

## Start new terms

Use this for a raise, a new title, new hours, or a move to another site.

1. On the Employment tab, select **Start new terms**.
2. Choose **New terms start on**. The hint shows the earliest allowed date — for example, when a
letter already issued named the current role as current.
3. Select **Start period**. The new draft opens. Fill it in and confirm it.

The current period stays in force until the new start date. Only one draft can be open at a time.

## End employment

1. Open the current period and select **End employment**.
2. Enter the **Last day of work**. The period covers through that day.
3. Select **End employment**.

You cannot end a period while a draft of new terms is open. Finish that draft first.

:::caution[Ending a period does not end the connection]
**End employment** closes the period and nothing else. The connection stays active and the person
stays on your roster. A closed period's end date cannot be changed afterwards. Only the person can end
the connection, from their own account — see [Leaving an employer](/individuals/employment/leaving/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does ending employment remove the person from my roster?

No. Ending a period closes that period only. The connection stays active and the person stays on your roster until they end the connection from their own account.

### Can I edit a confirmed period?

Yes, with Edit this period, until a letter or report uses its facts. After that the period is locked and shows why.

### How do I record a raise or a new job title?

Use Start new terms on the Employment tab. It opens a new period from the date you choose; the current period stays in force until then.
