# Requesting an employment letter

If you need written confirmation of your job from an employer you are connected to, you ask for it
in your own account. Lexpoint drafts the letter from the employment record your employer has already
confirmed, and your employer issues it.

You never enter the employer's workspace to do this. The whole request lives at
[**Employment**](https://my.lexpoint.io/app/workforce) in your account.

## Before you start

- The connection must be **active**. An ended or revoked connection cannot be used.
- Your employer must have **confirmed at least one employment period**. Nothing can be drafted from
  a draft record.
- Your connection must use the current consent version. If it was created under an older one, you
  will be told to reconnect — ask your employer for a fresh invitation.

If any of those is missing, the page shows *No letter-ready connection* instead of the request form.

## The two kinds of letter

| Kind | What it covers |
|---|---|
| **Employment confirmation (current role)** | Your current confirmed role only. There is no choice of scope — it is always the current period. |
| **Immigration-purpose letter** | Your current role, or your history, depending on what you choose |

For an immigration-purpose letter you also choose **what to include**:

| Choice | Result |
|---|---|
| Current role only | One letter covering the current confirmed period |
| Full history as one timeline PDF | Every confirmed period, assembled into a single document |
| A separate letter for each confirmed role | One letter per confirmed period |

Which of these an application needs is not something Lexpoint decides. If you are unsure, check
[immigratic.com](https://www.immigratic.com) or speak to a representative before requesting.

## Request the letter

1. Go to [**Employment**](https://my.lexpoint.io/app/workforce).
2. Under **Request a letter**, choose the **Employer**. Only connections that are ready for a letter
   appear here.
3. Choose the **Kind**.
4. For an immigration-purpose letter, choose **What to include**.
5. Select **Request letter**.

The request appears under **Your requests** straight away, and drafting starts.

```
:::caution[One open request of each kind]
You can have one open employment confirmation and one open immigration-purpose letter per employer.
If one is already open, that kind is disabled in the form and a note links you to the existing
request. Cancel it, or wait for it to be issued or declined, before requesting again.
:::
## Following the request
Open a request from **Your requests** to see its status and the letters attached to it.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| **Preparing** | The request has been made and Lexpoint is drafting from your confirmed record |
| **With employer** | The draft is ready and is with your employer |
| **With RCIC** | An immigration-purpose letter has been routed for regulated review |
| **Issued** | Your employer has issued the letter. It is final and available to download |
| **Declined** | Your employer did not issue it. If they gave a reason, it is shown on the request |
Each letter attached to the request shows its own state. While the request is open you can
**Preview draft** once the draft file is ready — this is the draft, not the issued document. When
the request reaches **Issued**, **Download** appears and gives you the final PDF.
```

## Cancelling a request

While a request is open, **Cancel request** appears on the request page. Confirm the prompt and the
request is withdrawn, and you are returned to Employment. You can request the same kind again
afterwards.

Once a letter has been **issued**, it cannot be cancelled.

## When it does not work

| What you see | Why |
|---|---|
| *No confirmed employment episode is ready for a letter* | Your employer has not confirmed an employment period yet |
| *This connection is no longer active* | The connection has been ended or revoked |
| *Reconnect with the current workforce consent before requesting a letter* | The connection predates the current consent version — ask for a new invitation |
| *You already have an open request of this type* | Cancel or finish the open one first |
| *An issued letter cannot be cancelled* | The letter is final |
| *Letter requests are not available on this environment yet* | The letters feature is not enabled where you are signed in |

If the facts on a draft are wrong, the fix is on the record, not the letter — see
[Your employment record](/individuals/employment/employment-record/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I write or edit the letter myself?

No. The letter is drafted by Lexpoint from the employment period your employer confirmed, and your employer issues it. You choose the kind of letter and which periods it covers, and you can read the draft.

### How many letters can I have in progress at once?

One of each kind per employer — one employment confirmation and one immigration-purpose letter. Once a request is issued or declined, you can request that kind again.

### Why can I not request a letter even though I am connected?

The usual reason is that no employment period has been confirmed yet, so there is nothing to draft from. The other is that your connection predates the current consent version, in which case you need to reconnect with a new invitation.

### What does Lexpoint decide about the content of my letter?

Nothing beyond assembling the facts your employer confirmed. Lexpoint does not decide what an immigration application requires. For that, see immigratic.com or speak to a representative.
