# Your employment record

Once you are connected to an employer, that employer keeps an employment record for you inside
Lexpoint. It is what their immigration letters are drawn from, so it is worth knowing what is on it
and who controls it.

**Your employer writes it, not you.** That is the point of it — a record you could edit yourself
would not be worth anything as an employer's statement of your job. Your role is to read it and to
raise anything that is wrong.

## What is on it

Each period of employment records the following. Not every field is filled in on every record.

| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| Job title | The title your employer attests to for this period |
| NOC code | A National Occupational Classification code your employer selects for the role |
| Weekly hours | Hours per week, to one decimal place |
| Full-time or part-time | Recorded by your employer. Lexpoint also derives full-time separately from hours, at 30 or more per week |
| Wage | An amount, with a currency. Stored as an hourly rate — an annual figure entered by the employer is converted |
| Duties | An ordered list of duty statements |
| Worksite | One of the employer's recorded worksites, with its city and province |
| Reports to | A person at the employer |
| Start date | When this set of terms took effect |
| Permanent, or a contract end date | Whether the role is open-ended, or a fixed term with an end date. It cannot be recorded as both |
| End date | Set when the period closes |

## Periods, not one big row

Your record is a series of **employment periods**, numbered in order. Each one holds a single set of
terms.

When the terms change — a promotion, a new wage, a different worksite, a rehire after a break — your
employer closes the current period and opens the next one. Nothing is overwritten. The earlier
period keeps the facts that were true at the time, which is what allows an employer to describe your
full history rather than only your current job.

A record can have **one open draft and one current confirmed period at a time**. Lexpoint enforces
both limits in the database.

### Draft, review, confirmed

| State | What it means |
|---|---|
| Draft | Your employer is still filling the period in. It cannot be used for a letter. |
| Review requested | The period has been put up for review before confirmation. |
| Confirmed | Your employer has attested to it. It can be used for a letter. |

Confirming a period requires at minimum a job title, a start date, and a frozen snapshot of the
facts. From that moment the period is **immutable**: title, NOC, hours, wage, duties, worksite,
supervisor, permanence, contract end, and the confirmation itself can no longer be changed. The one
thing that can still be set is the end date, and once that is set it cannot be changed either.

:::note[Why confirmed periods are frozen]
A letter is a statement of fact on a specific date. If the underlying record could be edited
afterwards, a letter issued last month would no longer match what the system holds. Freezing the
period at confirmation is what keeps an issued letter and the record behind it in agreement — and it
is why a correction is recorded as a new period rather than an edit.

## Where you can see it

Lexpoint does not currently give you a full read-only view of every field on your employment record.
What you can see, in [**Settings → Associations → Employer**](https://my.lexpoint.io/app/settings/associations?tab=employer-active),
is a summary on each connection card:

- The organization
- The date you connected
- Your **job title**, from the first period on the record
- The **employment period** — start date, and either an end date or *present*
- Whether the relationship is recorded as **offered**, **current**, or **former**

The job title and period appear only once your employer has recorded them. An active connection with
no confirmed period shows the organization and connect date alone.

The fullest view of the recorded facts you can get is a letter: when you request one, it is drafted
from your confirmed period, and you can read the draft before it is issued. See
[Requesting an employment letter](/individuals/employment/letter-requests/).

## If something on it is wrong

Tell your employer. There is no correction request inside Lexpoint on your side, and a confirmed
period cannot be edited by anyone — the fix is a new period recorded by your employer with the
correct facts.

Do this **before** you request a letter. A letter is drafted from the confirmed period as it stands,
so a wrong title or wrong hours will come through onto the letter.

## This is not your profile work history

Two different things, easy to confuse:

| | Your profile work history | Your employment record |
|---|---|---|
| Who writes it | You | Your employer |
| Who can change it | You, at any time | Your employer, by adding a new period |
| What reads it | Your ImmiReport and your immigration profile | Your employer's letters |
| Who can see it | You, and anyone you deliberately share your account with | You and the connected employer |

Editing one does not change the other, and your employer cannot see or edit the work history in your
profile.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I edit my employment record myself?

No. Your employer records and confirms it — that is what makes it usable as an employer attestation. If something is wrong, tell your employer, and they record a correction as a new period.

### Why does my record show more than one period?

Each period is a separate set of employment terms. A promotion, a wage change, a move to a different worksite, or a rehire after a gap all open a new period rather than overwriting the old one, so your history stays intact.

### My job title in Settings is blank. Is something wrong?

It means your employer has not confirmed a period yet. The connection is still active; the record just has nothing confirmed on it. Ask your employer to confirm your role.

### Is my employment record the same as the work history in my profile?

No. The work history in your profile is yours — you enter it and you control it. The employment record is your employer's, they enter it, and it is what their letters are drawn from. Changing one does not change the other.
