# The Cases list

[**Cases**](https://my.lexpoint.io/app/cases) lists every case you are on, whether you are the
principal applicant or were added as a member. The heading reads *Your immigration cases at a
glance*.

Archived cases are not on it. An archived case is gone from the list completely, not greyed out.

## Before your first case

With no cases, the page shows **No cases yet** and a single **Create your first case** button. Once
you have one, that button moves to the top right and reads **Create New Case**.

## The counters

Four cards sit above the list.

| Card | What it counts |
|---|---|
| **Active** | Cases whose status is Active. |
| **In Progress** | Cases whose status is Draft. |
| **Completed** | Cases whose status is Completed or Closed. |
| **Applicants** | Every member across all your cases added together. |

[Case status](/individuals/cases/case-status/) explains what puts a case in each of those states.

## Reading a case card

Under **Recent cases**, up to three cases are shown as cards, newest activity first. The line
beneath the heading says either *Showing all N* or *Showing N of M*; when there are more, the rest
are reachable from the cases list in the left sidebar.

| On the card | What it is |
|---|---|
| **Case #<number>** | Your case number. Quote this to your representative. |
| Status chip | Draft, Active, Completed, Closed. |
| Case type chip | Permanent Residence, Temporary Residence, Provincial Nominee, or Judicial Review. |
| Service chip | Full Representation, Case Review, ImmiCoach, or Self-Reported. |
| Firm name | The organization servicing the case. |
| Name | The principal applicant. |
| **N members · N applications** | Counts on that case. |
| Date | When the case last changed. |

## How a case gets created

Most of the time you do not create a case. Signing a retainer and making the first payment builds it
for you — see
[Payments and invoices](/individuals/proposals/payments-and-invoices/) for what that screen shows.

**Create New Case** opens a screen with two routes:

| Route | State |
|---|---|
| **From a proposal** | The only route that works. It carries a badge counting the agreements you can still build a case from. With none, it reads **Create proposal** and takes you to a new proposal instead. |
| **Self-reported** | Marked **Coming soon**. It is not selectable. |

A proposal qualifies once it is signed, the deposit is paid, and no live case has been built from it
yet.

:::caution[Your profile has to be complete first]
Both routes are blocked until your profile has a **First name**, **Last name**, **Date of birth**,
and **Citizenship country**. The screen names the ones you are missing and links straight to your
profile. This is because creating a case creates your applicant record, which needs those four.
:::

## Deleting a case

Hover a case card and a trash icon appears beside the status chip.

1. Select it. A dialog asks **Delete Case #<number>?** and explains: *This will remove Case
   #<number> from your cases list, along with its applications and members. You'll need to contact
   support to recover it.*
2. Type the case label — **Case #<number>** — into the box. **Delete case** stays disabled until it
   matches exactly.
3. Select **Delete case**.

A full-screen progress screen takes over, headed **Archiving your case**, and works through the
cleanup in order: documents and uploads, forms and questionnaire data, applications, applicant data,
household members, collaborator access, and finally the case record. It ends on **Case archived**,
with the line *has been securely archived. Data may be permanently removed after 30 days unless
restored*, then returns you to the Cases list.

:::danger[Deleting is not reversible from your side]
The case leaves your list immediately and there is no undo control anywhere in the product.
Recovering it means contacting support, and the data can be removed permanently after 30 days.
:::

### When a case cannot be deleted

Three conditions have to hold, and all three are checked at the moment you confirm:

- the case is still in **Draft** status;
- no application on it has been submitted, is in progress, or has been approved or refused;
- nothing is outstanding on its payment schedule.

If any of them fails, the screen ends on **Couldn't finish cleanup** — *Something went wrong while
archiving this case. You can try again or contact support if this continues.* It does not say which
condition stopped it. Retrying will not change the answer; ask your representative in the case
conversation.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I create a case without a proposal?

No. The New case screen offers two routes and only one of them is open: From a proposal. The Self-reported route is marked Coming soon and cannot be selected.

### Why has a case disappeared from my list?

An archived case is removed from the list entirely. Deleting a case archives it, and your representative can archive one too. Contact support if a case you expected is missing.

### Why did deleting my case fail?

Deletion is only allowed on a case still in Draft, with no application that has been submitted or decided, and with nothing outstanding on its payment schedule. The failure screen does not say which rule stopped it — ask your representative.
